Prayers of the People

All O God our help in ages past,
our hope for years to come,
our shelter from the stormy blast,
and our eternal home

To You we lift our praise, "O God our help in ages past, our hope for years to come, our shelter from the storm blast, and our eternal home. Ever aware of the slow but definite ticking of the clock, the ticking away of our lives, we come before the One who is eternal, to whom 'a thousand ages ... are like an evening gone'."

We come before you, dear God, a little bent, a little weary, We are merely human, O holy One, and we have seen too much of hunger, too much strife between nations. We are wearing thin around the heart. We must either build a new and stronger wall around our hearts or risk being mortally wounded. Or so it seems...

All Before the hills in order stood,
or earth received her frame,
from everlasting thou art God,
to endless years the same.

Yet one more time we will struggle to put aside our concern with ourselves and lift to you our prayers for the needy of the earth; the homeless in our cities, towns and communities; the children who live in crisis and poverty; the lonely and wandering on land and at sea; the suffering and mourning in every huddled mass of people throughout the world.

All A thousand ages in thy sight
are like as evening gone,
short as the watch that ends the night
before the rising sun.

We pray your blessing, your touch, your loving hand to rest on them. And on us. We need you; we need one another. You have bound us together with the thread of creation. We are one tapestry, woven, sewn, embroidered by your fingers. Let our designs reflect your glory. Let our patterns blend harmoniously into the whole, yet free to dance our own designs.

All O God, our help in ages past,
our hope for years to come,
be thou our guard while troubles last,
and our eternal home.

Let us see beyond our daily struggles, our pain, our loneliness, our searching, our need, to the wonder and beauty of which we are a part. You have created us in love to live in love - with you - with all the earth. Teach us your way of love as revealed to us in the way of Jesus of Nazareth, in whose name we pray.

All Amen.
