The Jesse Tree
Jesus is the scion of Jesse, King David’s father. The Jesse Tree is an alternative decoration for the yuletide season where symbols of the Old and New Testaments are used to decorate a tree. Each Day in Advent provides a Scripture Reading as well as a home-craft families can do together – leading up to the celebration of Jesus’ birth in Bethlehem.
The “Jesse Tree” is a medieval image type based on two lines from Isaiah:
“And there shall come forth a rod out of the root of Jesse, and a flower shall rise up out of his root” (11:1) and
“In that day the root of Jesse, who standeth for an ensign of the people, him the Gentiles shall beseech, and his sepulchre shall be glorious” (11:10).
